San Francisco City Hall Elopement Guide

San Francisco City Hall offers a classic, sophisticated setting for an intimate elopement with its iconic architecture.

SF City Hall Elopement

An elopement at San Francisco City Hall offers an experience that feels both intimate and memorable. The grand architecture that you see with its marble staircases and high ceilings, blended with all the gorgeous natural light flowing in, creates a truly stunning backdrop for saying your vows. Reserve one of the private spaces for a more intimate ceremony, within such a heavily crowded building. The central setting of this location makes it convenient for anyone desiring a wedding right in the city. This iconic building couldn’t be a more gorgeous location for a wedding in San Francisco.

How to Plan a San Francisco City Hall Elopement

Although the idea of a city hall wedding may feel simple and convenient, there is still a lot of planning that needs to happen to ensure it runs smoothly. First, you will need to consider the type of ceremony and location you are looking for, which we cover more in-depth below, as this determines how far in advance you will need to book. You will also need to ensure you handle the marriage license, and obtain your own officiant, as this is no tsomethting City Hall will take on.

Keep in mind that this is a public building, which means it can get extremely crowded. To work around this, make sure to arrive early to accommodate for parking time and check-in at the clerks office. Also consider an early morning or late afternoon time slot to work around the busy times. Just plan in advance and keep these suggestions in mind for the most seamless wedding day!

One-Hour Weddings

If you are seeking a more budget-friendly, simple ceremony, then the one-hour wedding package is a wonderful option. You have private use of either the Mayor’s Balcony or a Fourth-Floor Gallery for up to one hour Monday through Friday, between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. The rental fee is $1,200 and acommodates up to 100 guests, with chairs being an added fee. Just keep in mind that you will need to reserve your date at least four weeks in advance for this type of event.

Two-Hour Weddings

Two-Hour Weddings allow a more flexible time frame, and also the opportunity of exchanging vows on the Grand Staircase of the Rotunda, which is absolutely stunning. This package accommodates up to 200 guests, that includes Natural Wood folding chairs, insurance, and basic building services. This $6,000 package is only offered on Saturdays, and could include additional labor and equipment charges with any extra guests. You will need to reserve a date at least 3 months in advance for this package.

Evening Weddings

Celebrate under the golden dome! Exchange vows on the Grand Staircase, enjoy a cocktail reception in our inviting North Light Court, and treat your guests to an unforgettable night of dinner and dancing in the magnificent Rotunda.

City Hall is available for full evening weddings on weekdays and weekends. The building remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, though areas can be privatized for special event use during those hours. Due to regularly scheduled meetings of the Board of Supervisors, evening weddings are not possible on Tuesdays.

Rental rates include basic building services, but do not include equipment, insurance, security and other charges. See Fees & Expenses for more information.

When to Plan a SF City Hall Elopement

San Francisco City Hall is an ideal place to elope year-round since the entire ceremony takes place indoors. Unlike outdoor locations that depend on weather or seasonal conditions, City Hall offers a consistent and beautiful setting no matter the time of year. Its grand architecture, natural light, and comfortable environment ensure that couples can plan their day without worrying about rain, fog, or extreme temperatures, making it a reliable choice for any season.
